Pastoral Prayer

L
ord, we have heard it said before
that the arc of the universe is long, but it bends towards justice.
Sometimes it's hard to see that.
Sometimes it's difficult to see
that we are headed toward anything just or right.
Forgive us, O Lord, when we have been unwilling participants
in your good work of justice and righteousness in our world.
Forgive us for when we have grown comfortable in where we sit
and where we worship,
when we have grown comfortable in our rules and regulations,
when we have grown comfortable in our boundaries,
in the structure and order that we have created
to help us to make sense of this world
and to make sense of others.
Forgive us, O Lord, when we have created a system of others.
Forgive us, O Lord, when we have grown numb to the needs of others.
Forgive us, O Lord, when you have had to pick us up, kicking and screaming,
out of our own comfort zones
when you have had to carry us into this great mission of yours,
a mission outside the walls of our own comfort and safety,
and into the world that so desperately needs to hear the good News of Christ,
the word that has the power to transform
those who have withered and worn thin,
the power to make people whole and restored.
god, this morning, we pray that we would be
a part of your good work and the arc that bends towards justice,
a group of people who work towards love.
Through Christ we pray,
Amen.
