The three-day course features both ground and flight
training. Instructors put students through a variety of
maneuvers, including extreme nose-high and nose-low
angles of attack, 70- to 180-degree bank angles, various
combinations of flaps, landing gear positions and airspeeds.
Students even learn how to recover from inverted spins.
After the flight, audio and video taken from onboard
cameras reveal the entire mission, including cockpit
conversations. Instructors and students use the footage
during debriefing to identify and analyze mistakes and
learned lessons.
New training programs
In 2016, the company introduced three new courses,
teaching upset recognition and recovery training for

high-performance aircraft, helicopter operators and flight
attendants.
For its High-Performance Upset Recognition and Recovery
Training, Flight Research utilizes a Northrop F-5 fighter jet.
The intensive one-day course includes academics along with
flight training at near Mach, allowing students to experience
the magnified effects of high altitude and high speeds
common to high-performance aircraft.
Flight Research's new Helicopter Upset Recognition
and Recovery Training course is an exceedingly rare type
of advanced helicopter training in the civilian world,
according to Korner. It focuses on improving reaction time
and teaching proper techniques to prevent hull damage and
