The removal of the terminal increased the loss for the 50 percent defoliation treatment to 35 percent and the 100 percent defoliation treatment to 46 percent. COTTONSouth Carolina Darrin Dodds, Mississippi State University in Starkville, examines the regrowth of the cotton plant after applying the cut-off treatment at the 4-leaf growth stage. Table 8. The research was conducted under rain fed conditions and examines defoliation during vegetative and reproductive stages of growth. The treatments were 50 percent and 100 percent defoliation at V-4, R-1, R-8, and R-12 stages of growth with and without the terminal being removed. The growth stage at which the plant cutoffs were removed had a significant effect on cotton yield. The loss percentages from the terminal removal were consistently lower than what the current charts would suggest. Defoliation seemed to be only a concern at the greatest amount of defoliation-the plants were able to compensate quite well with 50 percent defoliation at all stages of growth. See Table 6. COTTONMississippi This trial, conducted at Starkville, studied the effects of plant cut-offs on cotton production. The treatments were cutoffs when the plants were at V4 (four leaves); R-1 (match head square); R-8 (first bloom); and R-12 (first boll). The treatments were to remove the top 2, 4, 6, or 8 nodes. An example would be at R-1, the cut-offs would occur at node 7, node 5, node 3, and node 1. The resulting losses are shown in table 7. POTATOESColorado Cotton research at Clemson University showing the comparison of defoliation at the 4-leaf stage and terminal removal to the untreated cotton. Research began in 2014 to look at the losses associated with simulated hail damage to white potatoes: both medium and late maturing varieties under the growing conditions in Colorado. Two different varieties, 'Russet Norkotah Sel. 8' (a medium maturing variety) and 'Russet Nugget' (a late maturing variety) were grown and had simulated hail applied at three growth stages: Tuber Initiation (TI), Early Bulking (EB), and Late Bulking (LB). Damage was applied at 0, 33, 66, and 95 percent and then taken to harvest. Losses varied depending on the maturity of the potatoes as shown in Table 8. CROPINSURANCE TODAY® 9
