Still Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, Mesa, AZ Technology is constantly evolving, making it a challenge to keep track of new advancements. This column highlights some of the best and newest online applications to help office productivity, patient compliance, and daily routines. This issue focuses on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans, so two of the six featured apps are from innovative companies that help with image viewing. These are marked with an asterisk (*). All of these apps are available from app stores. Dental CT View* Image Diagnostic Technology Ltd. This free app allows users to view computed tomography (CT) and CBCT scans directly on a smartphone. The company provides the following information on how to import files: "Dental CT View is a standalone app - it doesn't require any additional software to operate. However, the images have to be put into a proprietary format and loaded onto our secure server. They are then downloaded from our server and stored on your iPhone when you want to display them. We can put the images into the required format starting from digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) files. At the moment there is no charge for this service, however we may introduce a small charge in the future. DICOM files can be exported from almost every make and model of CT or CBCT scanner, so the app will work with almost every brand." Jack Imaging* Nephosity, Inc. https://beta.jackimaging.com/ Jack Imaging allows multidisciplinary collaboration through online sharing. Doctors can utilize the company's video conferencing to host online consultations, exchange files and data between all dental and medical fields, and coordinate patient care. 40 Text2Floss Riester https://www.text2floss.com/ This free app is a text messaging service that provides patient education and oral hygiene reminders. Users can customize their service by age group, and providers can track responses and activity. Waze Waze Inc. https://www.waze.com/ This is a free community-based navigation and traffic app. All users can update the map in real time, allowing users to receive the most current status on accidents, road closures, and even speed traps. Users can also set up alerts for cheap gas prices and send ETAs to friends and colleagues. LinkedIn LinkedIn Corp. https://www.linkedin.com/ LinkedIn is social networking for professionals. This website (and its companion app) allows users to connect with other professionals, companies, and groups in any occupational field. It is used to search for jobs, recruit employees, and build professional relationships. TED TED Conferences http://www.ted.com Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED) began in 1984 as a conference aiming to converge ideas. It has evolved into a database of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less) covering topics from business to global issues. The TED app allows instant access to talks from around the globe. Users can build a custom playlist to access at a later date, find talks by theme, and share talks with friends.
