Afternoons were also full of choices. People could go on a
trip to Eastern State Penitentiary, practice with the Peace Camp
choir (led by Leslie Lee and Steve gretz), attend a seminar on
"Class Matters," or watch a film.
The Peace and Justice Film Festival offerings were Ferguson:
A Report from Occupied Territory; Act of Faith: the Rev. Emery Andrews
Story, about the internment of Japanese Americans after Pearl
Harbor; "We Really Need to Talk about Injustice," a Ted Talk
session with Bryan Stevenson; and What Kind of World Did You
Live In?, about racial injustices on the streets of Toronto.
During evening worship, the group heard from four
plenary speakers: Rev. Dr. Leslie Callahan, pastor of the
historic St. Paul's Baptist Church in Philadelphia; Rev.
Dr. Amaury TaƱon-Santos, a Synod networker for the
Presbyterian Church USA (also a BPFNA board member
and, at the time, board president); Dave Diewert, founder of
Streams of Justice in Surrey, British Columbia (watch for Dave's
address about settler colonialism in Western Canada in the next issue of
Baptist Peacemaker); and Judge Wendell griffen, a judge in
Arkansas' Sixth Circuit for Pulaski County and pastor of New
Millennium Church in Little Rock.
Friday evening's service was planned and presented by the
youth and children, who attended their own morning sessions
during the week. (See pages 16-18 for the texts of the youth sermons.)
gail Hill of Spencerport, NY, led morning meditations
and Deborah Lynn of Nashville, TN, led late-night compline
services. Rev. Dr. Emilie Townes, dean of the Vanderbilt Divinity
School in Nashville, led a plenary session on Friday morning and
presented a homily at the final service on Saturday morning, a
communion service organized by the young adults.
The worship coordinator for the week was Doug
Avilesbernal, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church of Norristown,
PA. Pianist Jim Bennett of Richmond, VA, and saxophonist
greg Jarrell, of Charlotte, NC, led the music.
Scott Hayes wrote,
When we leave this place, the struggle for justice continues. May
we recognize that, until all find justice, none of us is truly free.
Listen for the words of Jesus, "Truly I tell you, just as you did
it to one of the least of these who are members of my family,
you did it to me." May it be so.
After the Saturday service, participants departed to
their homes all over North America-and, indeed, all over
the world-inspired and equipped for another year of
peacemaking. Another year to work for that day when all of
us are truly free. May it be so.
