SILENT TECH
TAKEOVER

The Signature team got tangled in this issue's interconnected
cover concept exploring the surge of the Internet of Things.

In this issue's cover story about the Internet of Things, several association publishers
speculate on how a high level of connectivity between members and their "things"
will bring a whole new dimension to servicing association members with content -
and it's not that far away.
The Signature editorial staff and Bates Creative design team wanted to tap into
this surge of possibilities that the Internet of Things will bring to publishing. There
were six initial concepts, which the editorial staff narrowed down to three contenders.

CONCEPT 1: HIDDEN TECH
The first concept was inspired by the
idea that the physical world is on the
digital pathway of becoming a programmable sphere powered by technology.
But there's a twist. Even though we can
hold technology in the palm of our hands,
turn it on with the push of a button, and
personalize it to our liking, we can't physically see the power stream behind it.
The designer wanted to demonstrate how
technology hides within our day-to-day
lifestyle. While the Internet of Things is
composed of billions of electronic objects
and sensors pumping through our world,
they are unseen at first glance.
CONCEPT 2: TECHNICAL CROSS-SECTIONS
The designer behind the second concept
took a literal approach to the Internet of
Things. The idea was to take an everyday non-electronic object, like a sofa,
and Frankenstein it with digital tinkers.
Instead of seeing the expected batting/
frame/springs in this cross-section of the
sofa, the furniture would reveal a believable but whimsical conglomeration of
technology and wires. The design team
was drawn to this concept of how technology will soon become integrated into all
unassuming objects, but wanted to dive
even deeper.
