CONCEPT 3: WIRE-SCULPTED
The third concept by far was the most intricate cover design brought to the table,
and almost ironic as well. The designer
went to the grassroots of the Internet of
Things by manipulating hook-up wires to
create a sculptural typeface. Not only has

technology evolved into wireless devices
with connectivity to content all over the
Internet, we, as a society, have become
re-wired into depending upon this ubiquitous access.
"The point of the article is the amazing
possibilities for publishing that most associations aren't even thinking about yet,
but should be," says Carla Kalogeridis,
editorial director of Association Media
& Publishing.
After some creative ping-ponging, the
editorial team at Signature and designers
at Bates agreed that Concept 3 had the
most potential. Not only was the wiresculpted text the most unique concept
of the three, but it also gave the design
team the chance to try something really
creative.
"Our approach with the wires wasn't
necessarily a literal interpretation of technology, since most things are wireless,
but more about how people and technology are becoming more and more interconnected with technology," says Bates
Creative Senior Designer Emily Biondo.
To make the cover art, Biondo used

1,000 feet of hook-up wire, wrapped
around and through an oversized poster
board that had the feature title "Power
Surge" cut out of it. The rest of the board,
including the Signature nameplate, was
hot glued into place by using an outline
of the magazine title. A contemporary
and clean white color profile was selected for the entire cover design because it
parallels with the idea that technology is
seamlessly interconnected into our lives.
The nameplate and the title art were then
photographed in the Bates studio, scaled
down, and brought together in Photoshop
to create the final cover.
While the cover creation was an intricate typographical experiment, everyone agreed that the final design was
worth it to illustrate the power that will
come to publishing through the Internet of Things. Was this winning cover
concept your first choice, too? Tweet your
