Former AM&P Board member Diane Rusignola, who recently started
her new job as deputy editor for NACS: The Association for Convenience & Fuel Retailing, recalls how different her 2015 job search was
compared to her job hunt in 2004. "Back then, you only applied to
jobs that you actually wanted that were right up your alley - you
didn't want to waste your resume paper and your stamps or your
money," she remembers.
Fast forward to 2016, where for better or
worse, candidates can easily apply for many
jobs for free - whether they're qualified
or not - with the click of a button. Many
are even applying without a resume by just
using a social media profile.
If you haven't looked for a job in the last
five or 10 years, you'll find that while the
basic principles of conducting a job search
largely remain the same, the mechanics
of the job search have changed drastically over the past few years due to the
effects of technology and the Internet on
nearly every aspect of the search process.
Key changes include the growing use of
resume-screening software, the focus on

cultural fit for both employers and job
seekers, and new technological twists on
interviewing and networking - which is
an even more important strategy today.
As a former association publishing professional turned certified career coach
and professional resume writer, I enjoyed
reconnecting with former fellow AM&P
committee members who talked to me
about how they successfully navigated this
new job search landscape. I also talked to
an executive recruiter who specializes in
placing publishing professionals to get
her perspective. Read on for an overview
