Experimental Analysis of a HF Hybrid Sky-Surface Wave Radar
bination of HF skywave and HF surface wave radar systems. But
this new system leads to new problems. The location of the target
in the coordinates of the receiving station is more complicated. According to the analysis, ionospheric contamination is the dominant
broadening factor under a long CPI. To investigate the concept and
signal processing algorithm, an experiment was conducted with a
cooperative ship as the test target. The experimental investigation
verifies the concept of the HFSSWR. The measured position and
velocity of the cooperative target agreed well with the information
predicted for the target using the GPS data. Several other noncooperative targets can also be observed. Results from field experiments show that HFSSWR is a promising system for wide area
surveillance application. Although some positive results have been
obtained, there is a need for further studies and improvements.
Signal processing in various clutter situations is still a significant
technical challenge of the future work. The receiver on a shipborne
platform is another trend for future work, which can improve the
flexibility of the system.
