New Avionics Program

ore than 100 students are learning about aircraft
electronics in Universidad del Este’s new
avionics program, the only one of its kind in
Puerto Rico, an unincorporated territory of the U.S. The
program’s first class of seven students graduated last spring.
Started in 2010, the twoyear associate program
for aircraft electronics
engineering technology
teaches students how to
troubleshoot and repair
electronic devices,
communication systems,
digital systems and
navigation systems, in
addition to providing an
FCC license review.
“We are the only university on the island that offers this
kind of program; the other one offers a pilot program and
ATC,” said Alex Carrasquillo Medina, an electrical and
electronics engineer and the school’s engineering program
director. “There are a few little technical schools that offer sixmonth to one-year certificates but not at the university level.”

Located five minutes from San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marin
International Airport, Universidad del Este’s engineering
program divides learning among three labs – one each for
avionics, electronics and networking.
While the networking lab is generally used by students
studying networking engineering,
learning about routing, switching,
Internet protocols and Wi-Fi,
Carrasquillo sees it as critical
to the future of his avionics
program.
“The lab is based on Cisco
equipment and requirements
to obtain the Cisco Certified
Network Associate Certification,”
Carrasquillo said. “With new
technology being implemented
on aircraft to provide Internet connectivity, it’s a skill our
avionics students will need to have.”
The school keeps individual class sizes small with no
more than 15 students per group to encourage hands-on
learning.
