BIOPHARMA RECAP

GlaxoSmithKline sent millennial newcomer David
Williams, an alliance manager in the R&D alliance management function, who describes himself as "still kind
of young in my career." The rich pick of workshops, sessions, talks, and discussion groups provided the practical
information he was seeking "to improve and better ourselves and continue to mature as the landscape of deals
and companies are changing," and share with colleagues
at his North Carolina office. He was intrigued by the session "Alliance Management Learnings from Great Leaders"
on the unlikely strategic alliance of Roosevelt, Churchill,
and Stalin in World War II, and the skills and leadership
talent that made it possible. The session revealed to Williams the ways in which managing conflict effectively
can improve an alliance. Williams gleaned numerous
takeaways-such as measuring metrics, defining alliance
skills, and stratification of alliances-from the session
"Aligning the Organization Around External Innovation
and a Partner-Centric Operating Model," presented by
Takeda and Vantage Partners.
"The ASAP BioPharma Conference is expanding in
scope, content, and a wider range of participants," commented ASAP CEO and President Michael Leonetti,
CSAP, when discussing conference highlights. "Partnering has been essential to long-term asset development in
the life sciences for decades, but it has never been more

essential than it is today because of the rapid change in a
multi-partner ecosystem. The ASAP BioPharma Conference provides participants with the perspective and tools
needed to navigate the increasingly challenging landscape in the life sciences," he added.
Take, for example, this year's keynote address, said Leonetti. "Realizing the Collaborative Advantage in Pediatric
Research," by Dr. David A. Williams [note this is a different David Williams than mentioned before], provided
a "unique perspective from a highly skilled and eclectic
doctor with a diverse portfolio of experience."
Chief scientific officer and senior vice president for
research at Boston Children's Hospital, Williams is a
successful international collaborator in various roles,
including as president of theĀ  Dana-Farber/Boston
Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. His experience includes investigating, co-investigating, or
sponsoring extensive clinical trials in the area of gene
therapy for blood, immunodeficiency, and neurological
genetic diseases. Williams' research laboratory has been
the recipient of continuous funding by the National Institutes of Health for 31 years, since 1986.
"Seventy percent of drugs we use in children have never
been studied and are not FDA-approved for use in children.
... There's no incentive for drug companies to seek [pediatric] label use," he told the packed room of life sciences
