she was made for the British or Canadian market,
or was a prototype. Her outfit makes me think of
a British school uniform. She is the only one in a
non-striped box.
The Sasson Model
Around 1981, when Sasson was a big name in
fashion, Lesney got licensing rights to the name
for a line of "Ginny" dolls and clothes. These
girls have a braid around the crown of their
hair, which came in blonde, brunette and rarely,
strawberry blonde.
The Sasson dolls had painted eyes. I have
heard of a sleep-eyed version, but have yet to see
it. Some of these "Ginnys" had very pale faces.
The Sasson outfits are distinctly more "grown up"
than some of the regular "Ginny" ones. The dolls
can wear each other's clothes interchangeably,
and it is not unusual to see a "Sasson Ginny" in
regular outfit, or vice versa, sometimes in a box
and advertised as "all original." If the doll has
the braid around the crown, she is Sasson model.
If she does not have this braid then she is not a
"Sasson Ginny" doll. All the Sasson outfits had
the name on them somewhere, and it is also not
unusual to see mixed outfits. The confusion by
some sellers is understandable, as the clothes are
all marked the same. I have deliberately included
one regular "Ginny" in a Sasson outfit.
The Sasson version of the gift pack included a doll and
three outfits. The cellophane is tearing away, but the box
has never been opened. These special sets have been
less frequently available than the regular "Ginny" gift
packs, but both are not very common.
Other Series Using "Ginny"
Several versions of the gift pack with the regular "Ginny"
were available. They only occasionally appear at auction,
and none of the items were unique to the gift sets
themselves, as far as I have been able to determine, but with
a doll and three outfits included, these special gift packs
must have made some little girls very happy.

Another thread in this tapestry is the series
of 12 International Brides. They use the same
body, and have painted eyes, but their faces
and hairstyles are individualized to reflect their
country. They will be pictured in the article. None
of them have been removed from their original
boxes. There is also a series of 12 "Friends from
Far-Away Lands" in national costumes. I was
fortunate enough to acquire both sets in one big
box. Most, if not all, of these dolls have stands
included in their boxes. I have not taken all of
them out to check. The plastic has yellowed
with time. These are the X-shaped stands that fit
between the dolls' legs.
Each one is all-original, and to my knowledge
has never been displayed out of its box, but
despite storing them away from light and heat,
some of the faces have faded drastically. I did cut
the tape securing some boxes and slide the dolls
out to adjust their clothing.
