I find the history of some of
these IATA codes interesting.
While London Heathrow, Los
Angeles International and
Frankfurt are straightforward;
why is Kansas City MCI while
Orlando is MCO? Neither makes
much sense. And why is New
Orleans MSY?
For the record, MCI is the
abbreviation for the original
Mid-Continent International
Airport. In 1972, the Kansas
City International Airport
officially replaced the existing
Mid-Continent Airport at the
same location. According to
the Orlando Sentinel, Orlando
International Airport is "called
MCO because it was originally
McCoy Airfield, named after
U.S. Air Force Col. Michael
McCoy, the heroic pilot who
steered his disintegrating jet
bomber away from homes and
schools to an empty field on the
edge of town on Oct. 9, 1957."
Aviation history in Louisiana
dates back to the mid-1920s.
For most states, aviation history
includes stories of barnstorming,
racing and, in the early 1940s,
military training. Louisiana
is no different. There are two
excellent museums to consider
on your visit to New Orleans.
The National WWII Museum,
formerly known as the D-Day
Museum, is well worth a visit.
I've watched this museum grow
from its early days as the D-Day
Museum to the full scale WWII
Museum that it is today. It is one
of the finest museums I have
ever visited. If you happen to be
driving to the convention, there
are a number of other aviation
museums to consider visiting:

So why is the IATA airport
code for New Orleans MSY?
MSY stands for Moisant Stock
Yards. John Moisant, an early
aviator, died in December 1910
in an air crash while making a
preparatory flight in his attempt
to win the Michelin Cup. After
the crash, the property was
turned into stockyards for cattle
and named after him - Moisant
Stock Yards. Original designs
of a modern airport began in
the 1930s but was interrupted
by World War II when the
U.S. government took over
the land intended for Moisant
Field for an air base. In 1946,
the government deeded back
the land to the city of New
Orleans, and commercial
service began at Moisant Field
on the grounds of the original
Moisant Stock Yards - now
known as Louis Armstrong
New Orleans International
Airport.
Now to answer the trivia
question. Of course, New
Orleans was the first airport to
install an instrument landing
