When ASAP started in 1998, 70 percent of partnerships
failed, Leonetti then pointed out. "We've inverted those
statistics for ASAP members. Statistics show that you
can now be effective 80 percent of the time. ... We presented the ASAP 6th State of Alliances report last fall
[definitively showing] that strategic partnerships, when
managed well, contribute higher revenue and higher
bottom-line success."

Before passing the podium to conference keynoter
Alex Dickinson, PhD, of ChromaCode (see our feature
story on Pg. 16 about Dickinson's eye-opening talk on
the convergence of high tech, genomics, and life sciences), Leonetti asserted, "Strategic partnerships are
not going to slow down. It's a great time to be an alliance leader. It will be stressful, and more demanding
than ever-just like the way we got here in canoes, fire
engines, and police cars."
The humorous comment referred to this year's challenging pre-Summit preparations, which included a
hotel fire and record-breaking rains in "sunny San Diego." ASAP staff and early arrivals coped with leaks
throughout the hotel, the "moat" formed around the
hotel by the swollen San Diego River, and related transportation issues. A few determined attendees required
police escorts or waded through floodwaters.
"Some of you did some amazing things to get here-I've
heard some really good stories," Leonetti quipped. "It just
never stops with you alliance managers!" n
