A Cross-Industry, Cross-Sector
Keynote Sets the Tone
Perhaps the most ubiquitous trend challenging alliance leaders and managers today is the proliferation of
cross-industry and cross-sector partnering. This year's
Summit programming focuses extensively on the broader thinking, practices, and tools needed to thrive when
unlikely, very different organizations come together
in partnerships, networks, and business ecosystems.
Tackling this topic with remarkable real-world experience-and setting the tone for the entire event-is this
year's keynote speaker, Alex Dickinson, PhD. Dickinson
has held a number of executive positions in both tech
and life science companies, most recently as senior vice
president of strategic initiatives at Illumina, which considers itself the world's leader in DNA sequencing.

In "The New Convergence: Life Science + Tech + Government," Dickinson will discuss collaboration in the
complex world of genomics, which generates gargantuan
amounts of data that is being uploaded to the cloud not
just for fundamental medical research, but now for an explosively growing array of clinical testing and therapeutic
applications. Surprising new players emerge daily. Life
insurance companies are deeply interested in the genetic
profiles of their customers-and how that knowledge can
help policyholders live longer. There are even consumer genomics applications, such as Ancestry.com, which
traces family history, and 23andMe, emphasizing the individual's genetic predispositions.
In this milieu, extensive cross-industry and cross-sector
partnering is a given if you are to succeed. Indeed, achieving success (which can include "failing fast" and starting
again, Dickinson notes) is no mean feat amidst the colli-
