Dickinson has been the CEO of Luxtera, a supercomputer chip company; co-founded Helixis, a molecular
diagnostic company (acquired by Illumina in 2010), with
Nobel Laureate David Baltimore; and has registered 40
U.S. patents covering a range of inventions, including
smart phone camera and fingerprint technologies. After
the electrical engineer's daunting leap into life sciences-
inspired, on a deeply personal level, by his sister's death at
age 10 from a brain tumor-Dickinson formed the team
that designed the BaseSpace cloud computing platform, a
genomic data processing storage system.

Presenters Share a Diversity
of Leadership Perspectives
Dickinson's leadership philosophy will resonate with
many in the ASAP community. "I'm mainly interested in hiring great people, providing them goals and
frameworks, and letting them do what they do best," he
explained. However, years spent working on startups has
added "a Darwinian aspect" to his approach: "There's no
time to learn on the job. You have to find people who
know what to do, and provide them with the resources." He also cites former Illumina CEO, now Executive
Chairman, Jay Flatley, as a leader who is simultaneously
able to focus on the broad sweep of strategy and the fine
details of execution. "No picture is too big to pay attention to, and no detail too small." Dickinson adds, "The
big picture stuff lets you build strategy. The attention to
detail keeps an organization very honest."
