Leaping across the Atlantic,
Royal Philips Electronics,
an ASAP corporate
member,
opened its first North
America HealthSuite Labs
innovations center in Cambridge, Mass., with a focus on
connected digital health solutions for the healthcare industry.
Additionally, the corporation has
introduced CareCatalyst, a cloudbased developer bundle of platform
services and open applications programming interfaces, or APIs, with
the goal of improving the health
data and records collection and
distribution system for patients,
caregivers, and providers. HealthSuite Labs will be located near
the Philips Research headquarters
facility to further build on its
present alliance with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The collaboration is geared toward
addressing healthcare issues and
IT challenges through innovation,
digital technologies, and clinical
reasoning.

Collaborating in the field of
personalized cellular
therapies, Novartis, an
ASAP global member,
and Penn Med opened the Novartis-Penn Center for Advanced
Cellular Therapeutics. In 2012,
Novartis invested $20 million into
Penn's research efforts in a joint effort
to treat a range of cancers. The goal
of the center is to find ways to alter
and manufacture immune cells that
can more effectively destroy tumors,
infuse them into patient tissues, and
test the results. Novartis is in the final
stages of clinical trials with their data
headed next to the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration for approval.
Polycom, Inc., an ASAP
corporate member,
announced a
videoconferencing
technology collaboration
with Microsoft
in its "Project Rigel" initiative,
which allows for Skype meetings
in any conference room via any
video display or projector. For-
merly, expensive computers and
screens were needed for Microsoft's
Surface Hub technology, which
marries video conferencing,
document collaboration, and
whiteboarding into a single
system. The collaboration
also encompasses a new cloud
video interoperability service
built by Polycom and Microsoft for
Skype for Business Server and Office
365. The technology is intended to
enhance Office 365 experiences and
deployments. It also allows customers
to interact with videoconferencing
platforms of other vendors, such as
ASAP global member Cisco, and
continue to utilize previous video
technology investments.
Edico Genome and IBM,
an ASAP global member,
are collaborating
to make the world's first Bio-IT
Processor, DRAGEN, available
on the new IBM Power Systems
S822LC for high performance
computing. The processor analyzes
next-generation sequencing data.
DRAGEN can now deploy the
Broad Institute's Genome Analysis
Toolkit, and Edico has suggested
that variant calling analysis of
high-throughput sequencing data
