"The challenge of alliance management is to help
bring together the appropriate combination of expertise and build value in the partnership-to make sure
we properly utilize that expertise and demonstrate
behaviors that are best for the program and patients,
thereby building value," Noguchi explains. "There can
be good and not so good behaviors, and my talk is on
the different approaches one could take in establishing
a partnership, characterizing the range of behaviors
of team members working in a partnership, and how
to manage them. It's about balancing the expertise
brought together by both partners."
The talk is absolutely practical information based on
his personal experience, he explains further. It is not
psychology-based. The lessons that can be learned
from his talk are pan-industry. "Behavioral aspects are
applicable regardless of the type of partnership, structure, size of company, discipline, or technology," he
adds.
Noguchi is a seasoned manager at Roche: He has
worked for the company for 32 years in business
development, portfolio management, pharmaceutical marketing, regulatory affairs, and information

technology. He has headed Roche's global alliance
management group since 2009, and his experiences in
different departments have helped build a perspective
across functions, he explains.
He oversees the Roche staff of global alliance directors,
managing more than 150 partnerships, at stages from
R&D through commercial, with a variety of healthcare
entities, large and small. He leads the collaborations
with Roche Group members Chugai Pharmaceuticals
and Foundation Medicine, Inc. In addition, Noguchi
is head of the Roche Japan and China business development staffs in their quest for innovative medicine
partnerships from the Asia Pacific region.
