The Alliance Excellence Awards-
Past, Present, and Future

The ASAP Alliance Excellence Awards were an early
component of the ASAP Global Alliance Summit. In
2001, the first year of awards presentations, there was
one lone award: the Alliance Program Quality Award.
It was presented with great fanfare in 2001 to Siebel
Systems, Inc., for "a state-of-the-art program for strategic alliance formation and management. By utilizing
Best Practices in the establishment of this program,
Siebel has dramatically increased the impact for both
itself and the companies with whom it has created the
alliances," according to a 2001 ASAP press release. At
the time, Siebel was a leading supplier of e-business
applications software; it was eventually acquired by
Oracle Corporation in 2006.
Clearly, the stake was secured. Interest in the awards
grew exponentially over the years, expanding in scope
and content into multiple categories and a lively competition. The initial goal was to honor companies that
excelled in the following ways-qualifiers the judges
still consider today:
"What we hope to accomplish with this year's awards
is to put a stake in the ground to promote awareness of
and participation in the A.S.A.P. Alliance Excellence
Awards Program," Bill Lundburg, ASAP's co-founding
president and executive director, wrote in a memo in

Deep involvement of the business, including
top-level support and proliferation within the
