versions. The two on the right
were purchased together
and are an obvious pair. The
smaller 8-inch lady on the
left has a red scarf and apron
with a blue and white striped
skirt. Her short lace cap has
discolored with age.

The dolls, commonly
between nine and twelve
inches in height have bisque heads made by French makers
such as François Gaultier and E. Barrois or shoulder heads
made in Germany. Parian-type shoulder heads with blonde
or brown hair and painted features are typical. The shoulder
heads are sewn onto cloth bodies with wire armature limbs
that have terra cotta arms and legs. The crudely formed

looks very rugged with his long painted sideburns, molded hair and pipe in his mouth. He
sports a jacket and skirt of brown cloth. A rope
is sewn to his left shoulder.
