"Beatrice" is a quintessential girl doll of the
1880s. She is a product of the German firm of
J. D. Kestner and has come down to us with her
commercial merchandizing chemise still intact
with its tissue paper insert. Her wardrobe contains
a few commercially made items and the rest of her
items were probably made by family members or her
young owner. In days well before the color pink was
associated with girls this fashion forward doll probably
reflects her owner's passion for pink. Denery Collection

Lady Gwendolyn Pingree, was a fund raiser
for the Wenham Museum (MA) in 1986. She
follows in a long tradition of dolls and dolls with
wardrobes raising monies for worthy causes. She and
her wardrobe were based on a Wenham collection doll, Lady
Betty Modish, a 17- inch Kestner, number 162, lady doll, that had
been dressed by the doll's owner's mother and aunt between 1902
and 1911 referencing contemporary French designer garments. The
skills of volunteer seamstresses, tailors, milliners, etc. have made
it difficult to tell Pingree from Modish items their work being so
precise. Denery Collection
