By 1946, the Hoyers were having great success and were doing
it their way from their small Pennsylvania city. Mrs. Hoyer's love
was in designing, especially knitwear, but she had a vision for
ready wear and for expanding fashion and accessories for her dolls.
At the height of the industry around 1955, she had
approximately seven home sewers, 17 wiggers, and 14 people
in inventory and shipping. The knitted and crocheted outfits
were crafted by Mrs. Brubaker, and most of the ornate, fancy
gowns were made by a woman named Grace, who was an
expert seamstress and worked at the Berkshire Knitting Mills in
Reading where Mr. Hoyer was in charge of purchasing and head
of inventory and production. As a result, he was able to purchase
leftover bolts of ruffled nylon which were used to adorn gowns,
party dresses and nightgowns for the Mary Hoyer doll. During
its heyday, the Mary Hoyer Doll Company was selling 300 dolls a
week, and from 1940 through 1960, 70,000 dolls were sold.
The Mary Hoyer doll, advertised as "the dressing doll," was
the first doll for which themed accessories could be purchased
separately. This, too, was part of Mrs. Hoyer's vision for what she
wanted for her dollies. She designed the hats, but approached Ira
Baumgartner's milliner's shop in New York City to ask the owner to
make the hats and then other accessories such as ice skates, purses
and cowboy boots for her doll line. The doll accessories became so
popular that Baumgartner started a new company - Premier Doll
Accessories, Inc. (1959-1988) and for the rest of their lives the two
had a great friendship. An interesting note - a blind man in Reading
made the skis and ski poles for all the Mary Hoyer dolls.
