The late 1800s brought back the
flat-top trunk. These trunks were
covered in smooth metal, embossed
tin and canvas. The canvas was coated
in shellac to make it waterproof.
Leather coverings were generally
out-of-use by the 1890s, except for the
more elite items, such as those from
Louis Vuitton of France (the company
began in 1854 and is still strong today).
Though many flat styles of trunks
are called "steamer" trunks, a true
"steamer" was a more specific size,
made to fit in the cargo of a ship. They
were generally up to only 14 inches
tall. These could be stacked on end
to make the most of the cargo space,
with the domed cases resting on top.
A "cabin," "packer" or "On Voyage"
bag was 14"x2'x31", sized to fit under
the bed in your cabin. A "wardrobe"
was a flat-top trunk that stood tall
and opened up to reveal hangers for
hanging longer garments. "Bureaus"
would open up like a dresser with
numerous drawers. What are
frequently called "half trunks" were
actually hatboxes for the Victorian
ladies; they each held up to six hats
or bonnets. They are square in shape,
and hard to find. "Wall trunks" were
designed with a lid hinge that allowed
the lid to lie flat against the wall on
top of the trunk base, saving space in
the room.
Generally, a trunk is lighter
in weight than a chest, and has
the handles. The box is built first,
typically out of pine or basswood,
something that is lightweight with
little shrinking and swelling due to
moisture. An empty "wardrobe" can
weigh as much as 100 lbs! The box is
then covered and coated with shellac,
if needed, before the trim is added.
Trunk latches were in use after
1872. Prior to that the strap and
dowel pin were common. Though
trunks are not marked with a date,
locks should have patent dates on
them, unless the lock is very small.
The large round-top
trunk has a stamped
metal covering and wheels.
Viewing the interior of this large trunk
reveals a drop-in box and a body tray that has a
hatbox and a set-up tray. Full-size models would
have had one or more dress trays underneath.
