Mary Lynne Saunders is with her grandmother, Mary Hoyer and a

Back in business! This Mary Hoyer doll was made in 1990.
the encouragement of a friend and long-time customer of
Mary Hoyer, they attended a local doll show and learned
of the renewed popularity of her grandmother's dolls.
The little girls of the 1940s and 50s had grown up and
now, often with their own daughters, began to wonder
"whatever happened to the Mary Hoyer Company?"
These King and Queen dolls are from the "Doll with the
Magic Wand Series."

In the late 1980s, as the Saunders investigated the doll
manufacturers in the United States, they were educated and
aided by Lloyd Middleton in Ohio and after moving to the
East, Mary Lynne's new "soul-sister," Julie Good Kruger. It
was now possible for vinyl to have a porcelain look, and the
DuPont Company had developed a vinyl formula with a
3UV filter and the color match Mary Lynne wanted.
Mary Lynne's concept of the revived company was to
have one, much like her grandmother's, with dolls, clothes,
and accessories. She remembered fondly working in the
stores, especially in Ocean City, and being a part of the
luncheons and fashion shows her grandmother staged. She
planned to have two head molds made - one with painted
eyes and one with cut-out eye holes. The Saunders moved
ahead with plans, incorporated the Mary Hoyer Doll Co. into
Mary Hoyer Doll, Inc., and they were in the doll business.
Although Mary Lynne wanted the company as she
saw it, she first honored her grandmother's desire to have
dolls made based on a book she had written years before,
The Doll with the Magic Wand. Together they worked on
the book, having it illustrated and clothes made from Mrs.
Hoyer's designs. The book and the dolls came out in 198990 and characters were introduced through 1996.
To inaugurate the book and dolls, the women arranged
to have a reception in the common room of a nearby
condominium community. They placed a small ad in The
Reading Eagle. They were overwhelmed by the turnout;
over a hundred people came, pouring out of the building
and down the driveway. Four hundred Magic Wand dolls
were sold that day.
