From the late 1700s to the
early 1800s the rounded top was
prevalent, lined with printed
paper or newspaper. From 18501852, Jenny Lind, the Swedish
Nightingale, traveled across the
states with P.T. Barnum. She favored
trunks with a round top on a breadshaped box, covered in leather with
metal bands and studs. These were
dubbed with her name, also referred
to as "stagecoach" and "gold rush"
trunks when decorated with brass
studs resembling gold nuggets. They
were popular up into the 1870s. The
Civil War era found a shortage of
metal and leather so trunks were
covered in paper with very little tin
trim, but banded with metal. Many
have been re-finished revealing
beautiful wood underneath.
By the 1870s, large roundtop trunks were being sold to
accommodate wardrobes of
the women who could afford
them. They were top-of-theline and generally referred to
as "Saratoga" trunks, after the
racetrack in New York where
many wealthy vacationed. These
trunks had solid brass hardware
and numerous compartments.
Several manufacturers covered
these trunks entirely in wood
slats, usually oak, which was
laborious and pricey. Martin Maier
of Detroit, Michigan, was one of
those very well known. Smaller,
less expensive versions popular
at the time were the "dome top,"
"barrel top" and the "convex
top," all of which are commonly
referred to as "camel back" or
"hump back" by collectors,
however, these names were not
used by the manufacturers at the
time. The "Monitor" was a very
sturdy, round-fronted trunk with
solid hardware, very durable, and
it was frequently advertised for
"gentlemen."
