Transitional versus proportional styles are compared with these
two examples. A 28 cm. transitional style "Dragoon" produced
between 1909 and 1918 is compared to a 28 cm. proportional
"German Infantryman" made between 1914 and 1921.
Karikaturpuppen line. Other early "international" Steiff
Karikaturpuppen figures included Uncle Sam - whose
long proportions were a perfect fit for this design style - as
well as popular cartoon characters of the time, including
several from both the wildly popular "Foxy Grandpa" and
"Happy Hooligan" comic strips. Steiff's Karikaturpuppen
were a huge success, and were even invited to welcome
visitors at the entrance to the toy department at the
World's Fair in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1904.
Starting around 1908, Richard and the design team took
a good hard look at the doll line and decided it was time
for a few updates and adjustments to the Karikaturpuppen
template. It was decided that Steiff's dolls needed a
somewhat more "lifelike" appearance. As a result, dolls
manufactured from around 1908 through 1912 have more
toned down but still slightly exaggerated features. This is
most evident with their proportionally large heads, ears,
and feet. Like their forefathers, these transitional dolls were

fully jointed, made from felt, and had "fingered hands"
and prominent facial seams. However, many featured more
modern glass pupil-style eyes; had remarkably detailed
clothing; and came with perfectly to-scale accessories.
Like Karikaturpuppen, most of these transitional style
dolls were also masculine. Popular categories included
policemen, firemen, farmers, members of the military, and
young people as scouts in "uniforms." This "fraternal"
orientation may have had something to do with the
nationalistic drumbeat leading up to World War I at the time.
Steiff is best known for its series of "proportional" dolls
that were introduced in 1909 and remained in the line
through the late 1920s. These were specifically designed to
be as humanlike and endearing as possible, and to phase out
the company's previous Karikaturpuppen and transitional
style dolls. Unlike in the past, both male and female designs
were featured prominently in the proportional doll line.
Overall, these dolls were produced in 22 to 75 cm. over
