The "Dumbo Prototype" is a one-of-a-kind doll, and probably a prototype by Kallus that may or may not have appeared at Toy Fair in 1941. It is extremely heavy and has quite a complicated construction with the long wood-jointed trunk that likely proved to be too difficult and expensive to produce, particularly as the world went to war. He is 11 inches tall. The manufactured version of "Dumbo" was far less complicated featuring felt ears, inset eyes and a small one-piece trunk. He is embossed on the back of his head "1941 Dumbo." He came with a skirt labeled "DUMBO, The Flying Elephant, License Knickerbocker Toy Co., New York." This version features his painted label. His friend "Timothy the Mouse" was announced in Playthings, but has never been seen. 128 FALL 2017
