Here is a view of the eye mechanism for operating the sleeping eyes patented by Jules Nicholas Steiner on the 18th of June 1880. Courtesy Matrix by Mail Inc. In the sleeping position note the pink waxed-covered eyelids. Next page: This beautiful baby Steiner "Series C" has the patented lever-eyes mechanism and voice box. In many ways this doll is reminiscent of the "moon face" Steiner babies and the related "Gigoteur Aesthetic" which also included two rows of teeth. The doll is marked down the neck in red ink: "Steiner Bte SGDG Bourgoin //" and incised: "Sie C.4." The body is stamped with " J- Caduceus- ST" in blue ink, lightly visible. The doll measures 55 cm. and is circa 1880. Courtesy Matrix by Mail Inc. Steiner sleeping eyes are marked "STEINER 4 Breveté SGDG." 38 FALL 2017
