This fully articulated Japanese-style small baby, with a fine papier-mâché
(?) round dome head covered by a very fine layer of wax, has black
pupil less glass eyes and a closed mouth. The moving head with neck
is attached to the middle of the body by a small white fine cotton string
going from the inside of the head through the body neck to the middle
of the body where it is glued to the crier. A mechanism located in the
soft midsection of the body allows the baby to cry when one presses the
top of the body down to the lower part. Could this rare tiny baby be an
example of François Greffier's 1855 "Bébé Genre Japonais." He wears his
original white bonnet and brown dress, with fine white underwear. The
doll measures 19 cm. and is circa 1850. Private collection France

soft midsection is covered in white cotton.
The most elaborate ones are all wood, finished with gofun. Cheaper types of these
dolls had cloth joints, glued onto the wooden or papier-mâché limb sections to allow for
floppy poses. It is these last ones that have been copied, a century later, by Jules Nicholas
Steiner for his "Japanese type" babies, except for the anatomically correct part.
Some of the particularities of Ichimatsu dolls will appear later on Steiner babies such
as the round "moon-shaped face" for some of them (series C) and the feet with the big
toe separated from the other toes. This was made to allow the Japanese dolls to wear geta
(wood sandals) with the strap between the big toe and the other toes. Also the hands,
with the major and the ring finger attached together. The eyes of the earliest Steiner dolls
also have a kind of Asian look with their "almond shaped eyes" even thought it is not
exactly the specific "half moon" shaped eyes of the Ichimatsu dolls.
It may also help some collectors, to remember some information about Jules Nicholas
Steiner, his "Poupée Mécanique," and then, discover the secret of the very rare "Gigoteur
Mystere" that I once held in my hands.
We know that the real Japanese babies were presented for the first time at the London
International Exhibition in 1850 and received a great deal of interest.
Jules Nicholas Steiner began his doll making in 1855, the year of the Exposition
Universelle de Paris where French doll maker François Greffier showed to the world, for
the first time, his "oriental-type" babies that he named "Bebe Genre."
